    TEACHERS’ GUIDE

An Overview of Lessons with Suggested Educational Resources

    by
Susan P. Waide and Brian Gurian

Oldest known Steinway piano, built in 1836.
Each year the La Guardia and Wagner Archives produces a Fourth Grade local-history curriculum for New York City schoolchildren. This guide accompanies the 2001 curriculum. The story of the Steinway family, their business, and the "company town" they built illustrate larger themes in the nineteenth-century history of our city and country. These themes include immigration and family history; labor, technology and the rise of modern industry; the westward expansion of the nation; and slavery and the coming of the Civil War. The focal point of all these lessons is a musical instrument: the piano. Lessons and exercises incorporating primary documents, artifacts and photographs will introduce students to the tools and methodology of history. Exercises build reading, writing, math, graph and map skills. We offer Educational Resources - books, websites, and other suggestions - to enrich your exploration of these topics with your students.
