    LESSON: STEINWAY SUCCESS

Steinway Hall, 14th Street.Steinway & Sons exhibition at the Centennial Exposition, Philadelphia, 1876.
Students are invited to explore the similarities and differences in consumerism between the 19th and 20th-21st centuries. How were products marketed before the age of TV, radio and computers? Prizes won at fairs and exhibitions, and advertisements listing personal endorsements, were two important methods used by manufacturers to promote one product over another. Exposure to, and education about the product were also important. The second half of the lesson asks students to think about how and where people listen to music today. How have inventions and technology played a role in both topics discussed here? The questions can also lead to a discussion of the importance of New York City as a great entertainment and cultural center.
